Meet Thorne Wilder & Brogo Mann
Coffee an' Grits belongs to two old friends with very different kinds of country behind them. Thorne Wilder was raised with the West in him. Brogo Mann was raised in the mountains. One learned to read distance, dust, hard towns, and the people who drift through them. The other learned hollows, timber, weather, mountain roads, and the kind of silence that tells you more than most men do.
The Western-raised one
Thorne's stories lean toward Western country, horses, ranch work, dusty towns, hunting camps, rough characters, narrow escapes, and all the things a man can survive long enough to laugh about later.
The mountain-raised one
Brogo carries the mountains with him. His side of the porch belongs to deep woods, creeks, cabins, hard weather, old mountain people, hunting, strange encounters, family lore, and stories that get a little taller every time the coffee is poured.
A friendship started in a shootout
They met out West during the gunfire at the Bitter Draw. For a short while each man had to decide whether the stranger across the trouble was friend, enemy, or simply another fellow trying to stay alive. They quickly figured out neither one had much reason to shoot the other. When the dust settled, the argument was over. They rode on as friends.
Neither one has ever completely agreed on who made that decision first.
The front porch is the frame
The stories can begin with two older men sitting over coffee and one of them saying, "You remember when..." From there the porch falls away and the past takes over. Some tales belong to Thorne's West. Some belong to Brogo's mountains. Some happened to both of them. Some are hunting or fishing yarns. Some are memories from younger and wilder days. And some were probably invented before the second cup was empty.
